Real Madrid vs Lyon in the Champions League
It’s been a long time coming but nine-time champions Real Madrid are poised for their first quarter-final appearance in the Champions League in six years, expect them to be taking this 2nd leg tie VERY seriously, and come out fighting even though they have the advantage of a (possibly priceless) away goal after the draw at le Stade de Gerland two weeks ago.
We’re poised for a thriller as the tie is tied 1-1 on aggregate and it’s far from a foregone conclusion (especially if Lyon get an early goal) and Real are well aware that they haven’t managed to defeat Lyon in seven encounters over the last seven years, plus Claude Puels team knocked out Madrid in this competition last season. Someone who HAS triumphed over Lyon is, Real manager Jose Mourinho, having overcome the French side in the Champions League during his time as Porto coach. The Special One was typically blasé about the clash, “My team are not afraid of recent history; statistics exist so that we can go out and contradict them,” he said. The always modest and understated “Greatest Coach in Football History” ™ added that “we must eliminate them, and I’ve already done that on my way to winning the tournament.” Jose Mourinho knows a lot more about winning than losing at home in the Champions league having only lost four of his 39 Champions League home matches as a coach (twice with Porto and once each with Chelsea and Inter).
Christiano RonaldoOn top of the manager’s confidence the Spanish fans will be buoyed that Madrid have a true siege mentality at their home ground, last weekend they extended their unbeaten home record to 14 games this season, with their Karim Benzema inspired 2-0 defeat of Hercules. Real Madrid (along with Manchester United) have yet to lose in this competition and more impressively are the only side still in the Champions League this season, yet to concede a goal at home.
This doesn’t mean Olympique Lyon shouldn’t bother turning up as they will be brimming with confidence themselves after their resounding 2-0 win over Sochaux at the weekend and they have the last eight of the Champions League in their sights, for a second year running. Also the French side are flying high in Ligue 1 just four points off the pace. Their side is also bolstered by the return of Playmaker Yoann Gourcuff who missed the league victory on the weekend, but will be without influential Brazilian winger Michel Bastos who is suspended for the clash after picking up a yellow card in the first tie.
Real Madrid or “Los Merengues” as they are sometimes called will be looking to striker Benzema who has scored on average a goal every 55 minutes in the Champions League this campaign to kick start the assault on Lyon. The stats also tells us that Olympique Lyonnais (aka Les Gones (that’s The Kids to you not fluent in French)) have not won in their last four Champions League matches, (which is the longest run among the teams in the competition) and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight away Champions League matches.
We have Bafetimbi Gomis to thank for keeping this tie close as he managed a late equaliser with a close-range volley for Lyon, after Karim Benzemas opener. Lyon manager Claude Puel must have breathed a huge sigh of relief when the equaliser went in, and feels confident ahead of the trip to Spain, "We finished stronger than them and its good that we levelled with a team like that. We wanted to avoid conceding but we have been left with an opportunity to qualify. We know well have chances there," he said.
I’m settling in for a thrilling match on Wednesday night and my money is going on a home win.
Prediction: Real Madrid 3, Lyon 2.
